  • 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste (or extract)
  • 200 g (1 1/2 cups + 1 tbsp) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • (Optional) 60 g (1/2 cup) crushed walnuts

For the Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 113 g (1 stick / 1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 225 g (1 pack / 8 oz) cream cheese
  • 180 g (1 1/2 cups) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste

For the Caramelized Apples

  • 1 medium apple, diced into cubes (about 150 g)
  • 100 g (1/2 cup, packed) brown sugar
  • 12 g (1 1/2 tablespoons) cornstarch

Instructions

1. Make the Cake
