Chocolate Banana Muffins with a Cozy Fall Twist

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh muffins baking in the oven—especially when they’re packed with chocolate, ripe bananas, and a hint of cozy warmth. These chocolate banana muffins are soft, rich, and moist, thanks to mashed bananas, buttermilk, and a touch of vegetable oil. Perfect for breakfast, a snack, or even dessert, they’re a comforting bake that feels just right for fall.

🕒 Recipe Time

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20–22 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups (150g) all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup (28g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup (99g) Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup ripe bananas, mashed (about 1–2 large bananas)
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
  • ½ cup (118ml) buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp (40ml) vegetable oil
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup (127g) semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a muffin pan with paper liners.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Whisk in sugar, egg, egg yolk, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla until combined.
  4. Combine: Gently fold the dry mixture into the wet mixture. Stop when just combined—don’t overmix.
  5. Add chocolate: Fold in about ½ cup chocolate chips, reserving the rest for topping.
  6. Fill tins: Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling about ¾ full. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  7. Bake: Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 9 minutes. Without opening the oven, reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 10–13 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
  8. Cool: Let muffins rest in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
